Mahindra cars has entered India's mainstream CNG passenger vehicle market with the new Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG. Launched on October 15, 2026, the new compact SUV cars combines a turbocharged petrol engine with CNG technology, aiming to deliver lower running costs without sacrificing everyday performance.
Priced from ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the XUV 3XO ZNG stands out because Mahindra claims that it produces the same power and torque in both petrol and CNG modes. The company also claims a fuel efficiency figure of 24.7 km/kg, making it an interesting alternative for buyers who want an SUV with better running-cost potential.
Unlike conventional CNG vehicles that often use naturally aspirated engines, the XUV 3XO ZNG uses a turbocharged powertrain. It also features twin CNG cylinders to preserve practical luggage space, addressing one of the common concerns associated with CNG-powered cars.

The XUV 3XO ZNG retains the exterior design of the standard XUV 3XO. The most noticeable difference is the ZNG badge on the tailgate, while the overall styling remains familiar.
Inside, the SUV carries forward the dual-tone dashboard, touchscreen infotainment system and modern cabin layout. Depending on the variant, features include a panoramic sunroof, digital instrument cluster, wireless Android Auto, cruise control and automatic climate control.
Mahindra has also equipped the model with six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and ISOFIX child-seat mounts as standard.
The XUV 3XO ZNG uses a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine with a specialised CNG injection system. Mahindra claims identical maximum power and torque figures in petrol and CNG modes, which is unusual for a CNG-powered passenger vehicle.
Initial driving reviews suggest that the difference between the two fuel modes is relatively small during everyday driving. The engine offers useful mid-range performance, while the suspension has been adjusted to accommodate the additional weight of the CNG system.
However, the SUV is available only with a six-speed manual gearbox. Buyers looking for an automatic CNG SUV may need to consider other options or wait for future updates.
One of the XUV 3XO ZNG's most important features is its underfloor twin-cylinder layout. This packaging helps maintain a flat luggage floor and keeps the spare wheel underneath the vehicle.
The arrangement improves everyday usability compared with some traditional CNG installations. Nevertheless, boot capacity falls to approximately 270 litres, so families carrying several large suitcases may find the available luggage space restrictive.
The Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG is an interesting option for buyers who want the practicality of a compact SUV, the potential running-cost advantages of CNG and stronger performance than many conventional CNG vehicles offer.
Its biggest strengths are its turbocharged engine, claimed 24.7 km/kg efficiency, useful equipment list and cleverly packaged CNG cylinders. The main drawbacks are the limited boot space, lack of an automatic gearbox and restricted variant choice.
Overall, the XUV 3XO ZNG makes a promising entry into India's CNG SUV segment. Buyers should compare local CNG availability, expected monthly running, petrol-versus-CNG operating costs and luggage requirements before making a purchase decision.
