MG Motor India has reportedly discontinued the MG Astor midsize SUV following consistently weak sales, according to a report published on October 16, 2026. The SUV was introduced in India in 2021 and competed with popular models such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq.
Despite offering a premium cabin, connected-car technology and advanced features, the Astor struggled to gain a significant share of India's competitive SUV market. According to reported sales figures, it averaged around 112 units per month between September 2025 and September 2026.
The reported discontinuation marks a possible end to the current-generation Astor's journey in India. However, MG is expected to continue targeting the midsize SUV segment with a replacement model.
One of the major challenges for the MG Astor was its limited powertrain range. When it was launched, the SUV offered two petrol engine options, giving customers a choice between a naturally aspirated engine and a more powerful turbo-petrol unit.
The 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine produced 140 hp, while the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine delivered 110 hp. However, MG discontinued the turbo-petrol option in February 2025, leaving the 1.5-litre engine as the sole choice. Buyers could choose between a five-speed manual gearbox and a CVT automatic transmission.
Meanwhile, competitors offered a broader range of powertrains and continued updating their products with new features, fresh designs and improved efficiency. This limited choice may have made the Astor less attractive to buyers looking for more performance or alternative fuel options.
Another challenge was the highly competitive nature of the midsize SUV cars category. Established rivals benefited from strong brand recognition and substantial customer demand, making it difficult for the Astor to build consistent sales momentum.
Although the current Astor has reportedly been discontinued, MG is not expected to abandon India's midsize SUV segment. An earlier report published in March 2026 indicated that JSW MG Motor was developing a new SUV architecture to replace the existing Astor and ZS EV platform. The new model is expected to arrive in India in 2027.
The upcoming SUV is likely to use the SIGMA (SAIC Intelligent Global Modular Architecture) platform. This modular architecture is designed to accommodate different powertrain technologies, including conventional internal-combustion engines, hybrid systems and electric powertrains.
This flexibility could help MG offer a more diverse product range and respond to changing customer preferences. However, the company has not yet officially confirmed the replacement's final name, engine specifications, features or launch date.
The possibility of a hybrid or electric version could also help MG strengthen its position as Indian buyers increasingly consider fuel efficiency, running costs and electrification when choosing an SUV.

The upcoming replacement could represent a fresh start for MG in the midsize SUV segment. Instead of relying on a single petrol engine, the new architecture could allow the company to offer multiple powertrain options for different customer needs.
A hybrid version could appeal to buyers seeking better fuel efficiency without depending entirely on charging infrastructure. A fully electric cars version could target customers interested in lower running costs and electric mobility, while a conventional petrol model could continue serving buyers who prefer traditional engines.
The new SUV may also receive updated styling, a redesigned interior, improved infotainment technology and additional driver-assistance features. However, these are possibilities rather than confirmed specifications, and the final details will become clearer closer to its launch.
The Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos are established competitors in India's midsize SUV market. For MG to compete more effectively, its replacement will need to offer a compelling combination of pricing, performance, fuel efficiency, cabin space, technology and after-sales support.
A wider range of powertrains could help MG attract more buyers, but the success of the upcoming model will depend on its final specifications, pricing and market positioning.
For existing Astor owners, the reported discontinuation does not automatically mean that servicing or spare-parts support will end. Owners should check directly with authorised MG dealerships for information about maintenance, warranty coverage and parts availability.
