Tesla cars has introduced a performance enhancement for the Model Y L electric SUV cars, bringing quicker acceleration to its six-seat electric vehicle lineup. The development adds to the appeal of the long-wheelbase Model Y L, which combines a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain with a spacious three-row cabin.

In India, Tesla has announced a complimentary Acceleration Boost for the Model Y L, with the claimed 0–100 km/h acceleration time improving from 5.0 seconds to 4.5 seconds. The update was reported on October 17, 2026, giving buyers another reason to consider the premium electric cars SUV.

Separately, Tesla has introduced a more powerful front electric motor for the China-spec Model Y L, alongside an improvement in its claimed driving range. However, the availability of this hardware upgrade in India has not been confirmed.

Acceleration Improves to 4.5 Seconds

The headline development for Indian buyers is the Acceleration Boost, which reduces the Model Y L's claimed 0–100 km/h time by 0.5 seconds.

The SUV previously had a claimed acceleration time of 5.0 seconds. With the enhancement, Tesla says it can reach 100 km/h from a standstill in just 4.5 seconds.

This improvement strengthens the Model Y L's position among performance-oriented family electric SUVs. Its dual-motor setup delivers power to all four wheels, helping provide traction during acceleration and on roads with changing conditions.

The quicker acceleration could also benefit everyday driving, particularly when merging onto highways or overtaking slower vehicles. Drivers should nevertheless maintain safe speeds and allow sufficient distance when overtaking.

China-Spec Model Y L Gets a More Powerful Motor

Alongside the acceleration enhancement, Tesla has updated the powertrain of the Model Y L in China.

According to reports based on Chinese regulatory filings, the updated SUV receives a new TL2 front electric motor rated at 176 kW, replacing the earlier 142 kW unit. This represents an increase of 34 kW in the front motor's rated output.

The rear motor remains unchanged in the reported update. The revised front motor is also more efficient, helping improve the vehicle's claimed range without increasing battery capacity.

However, Tesla has not confirmed that the same motor hardware is available in the Indian Model Y L. Indian buyers should therefore distinguish the confirmed acceleration announcement from the separate China-market hardware revision.

Driving Range Also Improves in China

The updated China-spec Model Y L has a claimed CLTC range of 776 km, compared with 751 km previously. This represents an increase of 25 km.

Energy consumption has reportedly decreased from 12.8 kWh/100 km to 12.4 kWh/100 km, while the battery capacity and kerb weight remain unchanged.

These figures are based on China's CLTC testing cycle, which is not directly comparable with the WLTP range rating used for the Indian-market model. Actual range will depend on driving speed, temperature, road conditions, climate-control usage and driving style.

Tesla has not confirmed the China-spec range improvement for India, where the Model Y L has a claimed WLTP range of 681 km.

Tesla Model Y L: Features and Practicality

Beyond performance, the Model Y L is designed for buyers who need more space than the standard Model Y provides.

Its longer wheelbase accommodates three rows of seats in a six-seat configuration. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, adaptive suspension and large battery make it a premium option for families seeking both practicality and performance.

The SUV also supports DC fast charging at up to 250 kW, according to its published specifications. Tesla says compatible Supercharging can add up to 288 km of claimed range in 15 minutes under suitable conditions.

These features help position the Model Y L as a family-focused electric SUV that does not compromise heavily on acceleration.

Price and Availability in India

The Tesla Model Y L is priced at ₹61.99 lakh ex-showroom in India. The reported complimentary Acceleration Boost enhances its performance without a separately announced price increase.

Buyers interested in the SUV should confirm the latest specifications, upgrade eligibility and availability with Tesla India before placing an order. The more powerful front motor and 776 km CLTC range reported for China should not be assumed to apply to Indian vehicles.

Conclusion

Tesla's Model Y L performance enhancement makes its six-seat electric SUV more appealing to buyers who want family practicality alongside strong acceleration. The claimed 0–100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds after the Acceleration Boost is the key India-related development.

The separate China-market motor upgrade brings a more powerful front electric motor and a claimed 25 km range improvement. Whether these hardware changes will reach India remains unconfirmed.

For now, the Model Y L continues to combine three-row seating, all-wheel-drive performance and a claimed 681 km WLTP range, strengthening Tesla's position in India's premium electric SUV segment.
