India's passenger vehicle market recorded strong demand in July 2026, with several popular hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and MPVs posting significant year-on-year growth. Maruti Suzuki Dzire emerged as the best-selling car in India in July 2026, registering 23,791 units and returning to the top position.
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R finished a close second with 23,398 units, followed by the Ertiga with 21,606 units and Swift with 21,538 units. Tata Punch completed the top five with 21,313 units.
The sales rankings also highlight strong demand for SUVs, with models such as the Punch, Fronx, Creta, Nexon and Scorpio recording substantial volumes. At the same time, traditional hatchbacks and MPVs continued to attract buyers, showing that Indian car buyers are still looking across multiple body styles.

| 25 | Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder | 7,187 | 8,814 | -18% |
The sales figures show a broad-based improvement across much of the market. However, the rankings also include a few notable declines, with the Brezza and Urban Cruiser Hyryder recording lower volumes than in July 2025.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire led the July sales chart with 23,791 units, compared with 20,895 units in the same month last year. This represents approximately 14% year-on-year growth.
The Dzire's performance is particularly notable because SUVs continue to dominate consumer interest in India. Despite that trend, the compact sedan continues to attract buyers looking for a combination of practicality, efficiency, comfortable cabin space and a relatively compact footprint.
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R secured second place with 23,398 units. Its sales increased sharply from 14,710 units in July 2025, translating into approximately 59% YoY growth.
The Wagon R continues to benefit from its spacious cabin, easy city usability and wide appeal among family buyers. Its strong July performance put it just 393 units behind the Dzire.
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga ranked third with 21,606 units, up around 30% compared with July 2025. Its seven-seat layout and availability with multiple powertrain options continue to make it a popular choice among larger families and fleet-oriented buyers.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift followed in fourth place with 21,538 units. The hatchback recorded an impressive 52% year-on-year increase from 14,190 units in July 2025.
Together, the Dzire, Wagon R, Ertiga and Swift accounted for more than 90,000 units during the month.
The Tata Punch was the fifth best-selling passenger vehicle in July, with 21,313 units. Its volumes were almost twice those recorded in July 2025, when it sold 10,785 units.
The model posted approximately 98% YoY growth, making it one of the strongest performers in the top 10. The Punch's combination of SUV-inspired styling, compact dimensions and broad powertrain availability has helped it maintain strong demand.
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx ranked sixth with 19,473 units, registering 51% growth over July 2025.
The Baleno followed with 18,241 units, up 46% year on year. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Creta remained India's leading midsize SUV in this ranking, recording 18,088 units and 7% growth.
The Tata Nexon occupied ninth place with 17,471 units, representing 36% growth, while the Mahindra Scorpio completed the top 10 with 16,009 units and 16% YoY growth.
Two of the most striking growth figures came from the Kia Seltos and Maruti Suzuki Alto.
Seltos sales rose from 6,010 units in July 2025 to 12,541 units in July 2026, resulting in approximately 109% YoY growth.
The Alto recorded even higher percentage growth, with sales rising from 5,910 units to 12,534 units. This represents approximately 112% growth, the strongest increase among the established models in the top 25 list.
The Maruti Suzuki Victoris recorded 11,334 units in July 2026 and secured the 15th position in the overall ranking.
As a new entrant, it does not have a comparable July 2025 sales figure. Its first appearance in the top 25 highlights the growing importance of Maruti Suzuki's SUV portfolio in the Indian market.
Mahindra had several models among India's top 25 best-selling cars. The Scorpio led the brand's performance with 16,009 units, followed by the Thar at 10,558 units, XUV 3XO at 9,429 units, Bolero at 9,336 units and XUV 7XO at 8,233 units.
The XUV 3XO recorded 30% YoY growth, while the Bolero increased by 24%. The Thar registered a more modest 7% increase.
While most models in the top 25 recorded year-on-year growth, two models moved in the opposite direction.
The Maruti Suzuki Brezza registered 12,055 units in July 2026 compared with 14,065 units a year earlier, representing a decline of approximately 14%.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder recorded 7,187 units compared with 8,814 units in July 2025, translating into an 18% decline.
The July sales rankings show that India's car market is not being driven by a single vehicle category. Hatchbacks such as the Wagon R and Swift continue to deliver strong volumes, while the Ertiga demonstrates sustained demand for practical MPVs.
At the same time, SUVs remain highly competitive, with the Tata Punch, Fronx, Creta, Nexon, Scorpio, Seltos and several Mahindra models posting strong numbers.
Maruti Suzuki continues to have a major presence in the rankings, but the performance of Tata, Hyundai, Mahindra and Kia shows that competition is becoming increasingly strong across popular segments.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire led India's best-selling car chart in July 2026 with 23,791 units, followed closely by the Wagon R, Ertiga, Swift and Tata Punch. The Punch's near-doubling of sales, along with strong growth from the Wagon R, Swift, Fronx, Baleno and Kia Seltos, were among the biggest highlights of the month.
With the festive season approaching, the competition between manufacturers is expected to become even more intense. July's sales figures suggest that buyers continue to value a mix of affordability, practicality, efficiency, SUV styling and strong feature packages when choosing their next car.
