Toyota Kirloskar Motor recorded a slight decline in overall sales in August 2026, with total volumes falling around 4% year-on-year. Despite the monthly setback, Toyota's cumulative performance for the first eight months of 2026 remained positive, with total sales increasing by more than 10% year-on-year.
According to the latest sales data, Toyota sold 32,842 units in August 2026, compared with 34,236 units during the same month last year. The difference represents a decline of 1,394 units or approximately 4.07%.
Toyota's August sales included both domestic deliveries and exports. The company sold 28,410 units in the Indian market, compared with 29,302 units in August 2025. This translates into a 3.04% year-on-year decline in domestic sales.
Exports stood at 4,432 units, down from 4,934 units in the corresponding month last year. Export volumes therefore declined by around 10.17% year-on-year.

While August sales were lower than last year, Toyota's cumulative performance remains encouraging. Between January and August 2026, Toyota recorded total sales of 2,66,696 units, compared with 2,41,733 units during the same period in 2025.
This represents an increase of 24,963 units or 10.33% year-on-year.
Domestic sales during the same period increased by 11.18% to 2,44,592 units, compared with 2,19,992 units in the January-August period last year. Exports also remained marginally higher, increasing 1.67% to 22,104 units.

| Domestic Sales | 2,44,592 | +11.18% |

The cumulative numbers indicate that the August decline has not significantly affected Toyota's overall 2026 sales trajectory.
Toyota's Indian portfolio covers a wide range of segments, including hatchbacks, compact SUVs, MPVs, premium SUVs and luxury vehicles. The company's major products include the Glanza, Urban Cruiser Taisor, Rumion, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Innova Crysta, Innova Hycross, Fortuner, Hilux, Camry, Vellfire and Land Cruiser 300.
Toyota's strong-hybrid technology has also become an important part of its strategy in India. With increasing consumer interest in fuel-efficient vehicles, hybrid models are expected to remain an important growth area for the company.
The upcoming festive season could provide another opportunity for Toyota to improve monthly volumes as customer activity typically increases during this period.
One of the important developments in Toyota's small-car portfolio is the expected arrival of an updated Glanza.
The current Glanza is part of Toyota's product-sharing partnership with Maruti Suzuki. With the corresponding Maruti premium hatchback scheduled for an update, an updated Glanza is also expected to follow.
The Glanza is an important product for Toyota because it gives the company a presence in the premium hatchback segment. A refreshed version could help attract buyers looking for updated styling, additional features and improved technology.
Toyota is also entering a more competitive phase in the Indian market. The premium SUV and three-row vehicle segments are seeing increasing competition from manufacturers introducing new petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid products.
This could put additional pressure on Toyota's established models, particularly in segments where customers have a growing number of choices.
Toyota's strong-hybrid technology, established SUV portfolio and brand reputation remain key strengths. However, regular product updates and competitive pricing will be important as rivals expand their offerings.
The upcoming festive period is expected to be an important sales opportunity for Toyota. Although August witnessed a year-on-year decline, the company's January-August performance remains firmly in positive territory.
A stronger festive-season demand could help Toyota improve monthly volumes and maintain its double-digit cumulative growth.
For now, the key takeaway from Toyota's August 2026 performance is that monthly sales slipped 4.07%, but cumulative January-August sales remained up 10.33%. With an updated Glanza expected and continued focus on SUVs, MPVs and hybrid technology, the coming months will be important for Toyota's sales momentum in India.
